Joint Commitment to Climate Protection:
Werner Schmid Switches Entirely to Green Electricity / Green Energy Supplied by RhönEnergie

The Fulda-based company Werner Schmid GmbH has continued to strengthen its commitment to climate protection in recent years. Now, the family-owned business is switching its electricity supply entirely to green power. The green energy is supplied by RhönEnergie. The regional utility has now issued the corresponding certificates.

“We’ve been working for some time now to improve our environmental performance,” report Managing Directors Matthias Hauß and Joachim Hauß. “Our environmental management system has been certified to ISO 14001 for ten years, and two years ago we also obtained ISO 50001 certification for our energy management system,” they report. In addition, the company has joined various climate protection initiatives, such as the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) and the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi), to measure and track its CO2 targets.

“This is also becoming increasingly important for our customers,” reports Matthias Hauß. The company is currently well on track to meet its climate goals at the corporate level (Scopes 1 and 2 of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol). “Taking our green electricity into account, we have reduced our CO2 emissions by 88.9% compared to 2018. In addition to green electricity, the installation of our two in-house PV systems, consistently implemented energy efficiency measures, and other factors have played a role here,” explains Joachim Hauß. The switch to green electricity now in effect corresponds to a reduction of approximately 1,400 metric tons of CO2 per year.

Participation in these initiatives marks an important step for Werner Schmid GmbH on the path to a more sustainable future, the two managing directors explain. They say: “We are not only setting ambitious climate goals but also want to ensure that our progress is transparent and measurable. Our investment demonstrates our commitment to a climate-friendly economy and our responsibility to actively contribute to the fight against climate change.”

When it comes to green electricity, the company relies on the RhönEnergie Group. Matthias Hauß explains why: “Werner Schmid places great importance on regional ties and sustainability, including in its business relationships. We’ve had a trusting partnership with RhönEnergie for decades.” The RhönEnergie Group also praises its collaboration with Werner Schmid. Martin Heun, spokesperson for the management board, explains: “We are happy to be an active partner when companies or even private households commit to climate protection. Werner Schmid is a pioneer in climate protection in the region. We see ourselves as the heart and driving force behind environmental protection. That’s why we can now take a big step for the climate together.” Dr. Janosch Günzel, energy management representative at Werner Schmid, and Volker Böse, key account manager at RhönEnergie Fulda, were also present at the certificate presentation.
