Werner Schmid Strengthens Collaborations in Research and Teaching

11.07.2023

For ten years now, Werner Schmid GmbH has been engaged in regular collaboration with the Technical University of Darmstadt. Following the launch of an initial joint research project in 2013, the collaboration was intensified at the beginning of 2018 with the creation of a dual doctoral position. This has enabled us to continuously secure research projects, which we regularly report on in this section.

As a result, Werner Schmid has also been able to support teaching, particularly by contributing several case studies — for example, on the topics of “factory planning” and “sequence of stages” — to the lecture series “Technology of Manufacturing Processes” in the first semester of the general mechanical engineering program. After completing the case study, participating students were invited to take a close-up look at our production facilities.

In 2021, the Institute for Production Engineering and Metal Forming Machinery (PtU) at the Technical University of Darmstadt asked WS if it would like to contribute practical examples to a newly designed lecture on “Quality Management.” In collaboration with one of our customers, we selected a component that poses high demands not only on quality but also on technical feasibility — a perfect example for introducing students to measurement technology and illustrating, in a guest lecture, how important quality management is in a mass production process. While this lecture had to be held digitally last year due to the pandemic, this year our colleagues Siegfried Baier and Janosch Günzel were able to present the topic “Test Equipment Capability Analysis as Part of Quality Management at Werner Schmid GmbH” to the students in person. The content ranged from the manufacturing process of the component itself to the test equipment capability of the measuring instruments used, to the general relevance of quality assurance at Werner Schmid — for example, the number of employees involved in quality-related tasks.

Thanks to our partnership with our clients and our long-standing collaboration with the PtU, we are able to incorporate practical content into university-level instruction. Supporting education at every level of our educational system is very important to us. If you are also interested, please feel free to contact us.
