A Milestone for Our Future: Werner Schmid Opens New Plastics Processing Facility

07.05.2026

After a five-year project duration and a total investment of approximately 10 million euros, Werner Schmid GmbH celebrated the official opening of its new plastics processing facility last Monday. The opening does not mark the end of the project, however, as we have been in the process of relocating while continuing operations since the end of the construction phase in the spring of 2025. This is a highly complex project in its own right; after all, the move must take place smoothly, without interrupting serial production and without affecting the quality of our products.

However, the date for the formal opening was not chosen at random: May also marks the 80th anniversary of Werner Schmid GmbH—an ideal time to celebrate this important milestone with the public, together with the participating contractors and representatives from regional politics and the press.

With the new plastics processing facility, we have expanded our production area from 16,000 to approximately 20,000 m², thereby creating 30% expansion capacity for future growth. State-of-the-art building systems ensure the necessary operating conditions for our 25 injection molding machines. Currently, Werner Schmid GmbH processes approximately 1,250 metric tons of plastic granulate per year, which corresponds to about 5 metric tons per workday. Sustainability and energy efficiency were taken into account right from the construction phase: the production hall’s heating system utilizes waste heat from our injection molding machines, and the roof is equipped with a solar system with a capacity of over 600 kWp.

In his opening remarks, District Administrator Bernd Woide praised the “entrepreneurial courage” behind this investment, which he described as a “beacon” amid a challenging economic climate. He called it a “wonderful day for the entire region.” State Representative Sebastian Müller also spoke of a strong signal for the region and highlighted our social commitment, particularly to people with disabilities through Perspektiva gGmbH.

Michael Konow, CEO of the Fulda Chamber of Industry and Commerce, said that such a major investment by a medium-sized industrial company has become “a rarity.”

We are pleased that the regional press has reported on our opening in great detail. Please find a brief press roundup attached:
