Sustainability

Sustainability is not a trend for us, but a firmly anchored part of our corporate philosophy. As a family business, we take responsibility for our environment.

That is why we have been working on improving our environmental performance for a long time: our environmental management system has been certified to ISO 14001 since 2015, and our energy management system was also certified to ISO 50001 in 2023. We are also a member of various climate protection and sustainability initiatives:

The Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) provides companies and cities with a platform on which they can disclose their environmental impact in the areas of climate change, water and forest protection. By participating in the CDP, we not only want to better understand our climate impact, but also measure our progress in relation to sustainability goals and compare it with global best practices. Werner Schmid GmbH has already achieved the best possible rating for a small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) in its first participation.

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) encourages companies to set science-based climate targets that are in line with the goals of the Paris Agreement. With the SBTi, we commit to taking emission-reducing measures based on the latest scientific findings and to regularly reviewing our targets.

The “Climate-friendly SMEs” initiative is a project of the German Association of Energy Consumers (VEA). The focus is on sharing knowledge between SMEs in order to encourage and enable members to take concrete measures to reduce CO2 emissions.

Since 2024, Werner Schmid GmbH has been using green electricity to strengthen its commitment to climate-friendly business practices.

We are currently well on track with our climate targets: with our two PV systems, consistent identification and implementation of energy efficiency measures and the purchase of green electricity, we were able to reduce our CO2 emissions (based on Scope 1 and 2 of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol) by an impressive 88.9% between 2018 and 2025.

The PRS Green Label is awarded to companies that make a significant contribution to the circular economy by returning pallets used by the polymer industry to the material cycle. The European PRS system collects, repairs, and redistributes pallets to avoid waste and conserve natural resources.

Werner Schmid GmbH meets the label’s requirements with a return rate of over 65% and has been awarded the PRS Green Label (1 star) for its commitment in the period from May 2024 to May 2025. During this period, 251 pallets were returned, saving 36 trees. 2 stars are awarded for saving 251 trees and 3 stars for saving 1,001 trees.

By actively participating in the PRS return system, we promote the reuse of valuable materials, reduce our ecological footprint, and strengthen our commitment to a sustainable and resource-efficient supply chain.

Incidentally, our customers also benefit from our consistent energy management: we are able to create CO2 balances at product level and can therefore also help our customers to create transparency regarding CO2 emissions along the supply chain.
